How Do We Prepare Students with Study Skills and College and Career Preparation?

Learn more about AVID and post-graduation preparation

From a very early age, good study habits and organizational skills can set a course for success throughout a student's academic career and beyond. It is critical that students learn to do more than just memorize and test. We teach students how to set goals, develop solid organizational and study skills that will help them to succeed at every next level, whether it's the next grade, high school, college, or career.

We also prepare students to be better communicators and teach them how to advocate for themselves during their academic journey. We help them to research possible career and college paths and give them tools to help them reach their goals and ultimately find success in school and in their career.

Many CSUSA-managed schools promote the AVID program to prepare students for high school,  college, and career readiness. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID schools are implemented school-wide in grades K through five and focus on high school and college readiness skills such as :

  • Honing study habits
  • Note-taking skills
  • Organization
  • Collaboration

In grades six through 12, AVID is an elective for which students can apply. It requires at least one accelerated course that offers high school and/or college credit. Students in an AVID elective take college field trips, participate in tutorials twice a week that employ higher-level thinking and questioning in an inquiry/collaboration format. Additionally, students have access to academic tutoring to support those who are accessing accelerated courses.
